MICHAEL KNIGHT

Homeslice Pizza / Jakes Saloon

Seventeen years ago, Knight decided he wanted to be part of the Downtown Toledo revitalization and opened Homeslice Pizza, one of the first businesses on St. Clair Street. He now owns his second restaurant, Jakes Saloon. His biggest reward is being able to supply jobs and opportunities. Over the years, he has employed 200 people to whom he was able to provide experience and life skills.

Community service started in his youth when he and his mother created the OLPH Youth Group. The group traveled to impoverished communities to provide needed assistance. The past 10 years, Knight has coached youth soccer, teaching skills needed both on and off the field. He is currently involved with Volunteers of America and has employed several members who many consider unemployable.  Among the other organizations he supports are the Boys and Girls Club, Read for Literacy and Leadership Toledo.

Homeslice has won many awards from the community through City Paper, The Blade and Lucas County Health Department. His personal achievement is over-coming obstacles he has faced personally.
